The wave of anti-insider, anti-“politician” sentiment among large swaths of the American electorate is now so strong that many voters now tune out, or even actively discount, real accomplishments in public office.
This development is more than just a sign of a growing and — to be blunt — downright idiotic contagion of know-nothing-ism; it is dangerous for our constitutional republic.
In almost every other field of endeavor, people recognize that past is prologue…. Yet when it comes to government, many Americans do just the opposite. They make judgments based not on what a candidate has done, but what they hear him say. Not on his record, but on his promises….
