A key metric in presidential politics isn’t who is liberal or conservative, but who “cares about people like me.” Polls in recent elections show that whoever wins that ‘issue’ likely wins the election. So can a Republican candidate connect with voters in this way, as Reagan did? If they can’t, the GOP faces an uphill battle to the White House regardless of the economy or international affairs.
